Historically, our fascination with asteroids began in 1801 with the discovery of Ceres, the first asteroid, by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi. This marked the beginning of an era of asteroid research, leading to the identification of over a million asteroids since then! However, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that we began to appreciate the potential dangers they pose. The Tunguska event in 1908, where an explosion likely caused by a comet or asteroid flattened 2,000 square kilometres of Siberian forest, served as a stark reminder of what could happen if we ignored these celestial bodies.

Did you know that today there are millions of asteroids, with several classified as potentially hazardous? The thought of a significant asteroid impacting Earth can be disconcerting, yet it raises a crucial question: are we doing enough to prepare for potential asteroid threats?
